Exploring the Art of Ernesto Leon

A Didactic Guide to Appreciate the Diversity of His Work

April 21st - June 11th, 2023

Ernesto León, painter and sculptor (b. 1956) currently lives and works in Houston, Texas.

With over 40 years of professional experience, Ernesto has extensive knowledge in different mediums such as photography, painting, sculpture, and audio/video projects. He has been educated in visual arts in Madrid (School of Arts and Crafts of Madrid), New York (New York University), and Mexico City (National Autonomous University of Mexico).

Currently, the artist is dedicated to painting and sculpture, and his works are represented in renowned national and international private and institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Ernesto León currently creates paintings related to traces, vestiges, and time. These works are influenced by history, the art of Jackson Pollock, and the work of Italo-Argentinian artist Lucio Fontana. These reflections not only address the action and the way he seeks another reality within the pictorial plane but also assume a very concrete position regarding the current art scene, which is often saturated with colors, plastic, and immediate perception of "likes".

These paintings of traces are preceded by a series of sculptures related to totems, light, and objects of mystical or cultic significance, under a minimalist aesthetic. These sculptures deal with the sunlight, the construction, and organization of geometric elements as a way of approaching space. Ernesto has written and made videos on these reflections in recent years.

In the last four years, Ernesto has focused on philosophy in systematic studies, delving into the study of the Hegelian system for the understanding of totality and reality.
